Our moving boxes are always clean, as they are inspected and washed after every move. We also make sure the boxes are large enough so that all your household items will fit comfortably into the moving boxes we use.
Rule of thumb for the number of moving boxes
As a good rule of thumb, you’ll need 0.9–1 moving box for every square metre of your current home, up to one hundred square metres. It’s wise to round up the number of boxes to the nearest ten to make sure you have enough. For example, if you have a 77 m² apartment in Helsinki, reserve 77 moving boxes. If your home is over one hundred square metres, it’s a good idea to go through the required number of boxes together with our customer service team.
Rent high-quality moving boxes
It’s easy to collect free cardboard boxes from nearby shops in the Helsinki metro area, but we recommend avoiding them – especially fruit and vegetable crates. The classic banana boxes are dangerous for both movers and your belongings, as they lack a proper base in the centre and haven’t been disinfected against possible fruit fly larvae. That’s why we always recommend renting proper moving boxes for your move.
Above is an example of a proper moving box. The box measures 597 x 397 x 300 mm. These moving boxes stack into a very compact space when empty. A good moving box has generous grip handles and is easy to stack. Your belongings stay much safer in a proper moving box. Note that moving boxes should not be overfilled, as overfilled boxes cannot be stacked properly.
Packing your belongings into moving boxes
When packing boxes, it’s best to always wrap dishes individually in newspaper, tissue paper or kraft paper. Not all boxes should be packed completely full. For example, boxes containing books should be filled about halfway and then topped up with other items if possible. Also keep in mind that moving boxes are always stacked on top of each other in the truck, so it’s very important to consider this when packing each box. To save space at home, you can stack them the same way – and you’ll easily notice if a box is too full. Small houseplants can also be packed into a moving box, provided they fit inside height-wise.
What if you run out of moving boxes during packing?
If you happen to run out of boxes, don’t worry. Kengurut will deliver additional boxes when needed in the Helsinki metro area. The box rental is always based on the actual number of boxes and actual rental days. So if you’ve notified us that the boxes are ready for pickup the day before, and we can only collect them later than the agreed pickup date due to our own scheduling, we’ll calculate the rental period up to the date you originally reported them as ready.
